had to give it a wiggle and rotated the crank and it slid in 
Little update
Adjusted the clutch câble and can now engage and disengage the gearbox. Trialled it worked by clutching in and out and lt allowing the car to roll down my drive. Was a pain pushing it back up the incline to clear the garage door though....
Received a package from @BobG all the way from Ohio!! (huge thank you) it included a tubular manifold and modified intake manifold. The exhaust is already sat in place the inlet needs a tweak to work but all looks good so far and if I can make it work sorts the issue of the carb sitting flat.
Refitted the rear fuel tank cover/panel and started wiring things up. Need to find a location for the temp sensor and remake a connection for the oil switch but everything else is in place.
Rad panel is swung in too so can crack on with the cooling side of things.
Looking good now. Will need to take a look at the exhaust and how I want to make/route that. Very tempted to go with a sideways mounts "Devil" type setup
